The 2008 training series titled "Farmer for a Day" spotlights gardening techniques and particular crops. The trainings feature staff who will share their knowledge in the peaceful setting of Crabtree Farms. Join us for a hands-on, practical and fun farm experience. Farmer For A Day trainings are free.

  • Garlic Harvesting - Farmer For a Day
    Friday, June 13th, 10 am - 1 pm
    Cost: Member:FREE Non-Member:FREE
    Instructor: Joel Houser, Crabtree Farms Farm Manager
    Summary: This informal training will introduce participants to garlic harvesting. Joel Houser, Crabtree's Farm Manager, will instruct volunteers on how to pick garlic and store it for maximum shelf life. He will share his growing knowledge, from planting to harvesting through question and answer. Wear appropriate attire for gardening, such as comfortable work shoes and clothes (things that can get dirty).

  • Greenhouse Growing - Farmer For a Day
    Thursday, August 28th, 10 am - 1 pm
    Cost: Member: FREE Non-Member:FREE
    Instructor: Mike Barron, Crabtree Farms Greenhouse Manager
    Summary: This informal training will introduce participants to growing in a greenhouse. Mike Barron, Crabtree's Greenhouse Manager, will instruct volunteers on how to grow and care for perennials and annuals in a greenhouse setting. He will share his growing knowledge, from pruning to hardening plants through question and answer. Wear appropriate attire for gardening, such as comfortable work shoes and clothes (things that can get dirty).

  • Garlic Planting - Farmer For a Day
    Saturday October 11th, 10am-1pm
    Cost: Member:FREE Non-Member:FREE
    Instructor: Joel Houser, Crabtree Farms Farm Manager
    Summary: This volunteer training teaches techniques on successful planting of this culinary staple. Joel Houser, Crabtree's Farm Manager, will instruct participants through hands-on demonstration in our own garlic patch. Wear appropriate attire for gardening, such as old work shoes and clothes (things that can get dirty). Children welcome! Activity appropriate for kids 10 and older.

  • Strawberry Planting - Farmer For a Day
    Wednesday, October 14th, 9 am - 12 pm
    Cost: Member: FREE Non-Member:FREE
    Instructor: Joel Houser, Crabtree Farms Farm Manager
    Summary: This informal training will introduce participants to potato planting. Joel Houser, Crabtree's Farm Manager, will instruct volunteers on how to plant potatoes for healthy growth. He will share his growing knowledge, from planting to harvesting through question and answer. Wear appropriate attire for gardening, such as comfortable work shoes and clothes (things that can get dirty).
